angels cradle

        Angel's Cradle

There were no bands, no golden streets,
No harps that played "Amazing Grace".
But standing near this heaven's seat,
Was shining love in every face.

The light was dim. The air was foul.
A cold night wind blew on them there.
A homeless girl held in a towel
A tiny babe. She spoke a prayer.

God grant him now, the home he needs
 In Angels' cradles up above.
And give to him a place to sleep
And tell him we will send our love.

A quiet crowd drew closer in
To wrap their arms around her there
And give to her their comfort then
To offer her their loving care.

With poverty and future dim
They knew each others hidden wrongs.
But when their troubles bested them
It was their love that kept them strong.

She pulled the baby close to her.
A tear fell from her twitching eye.
This heartfelt pain would not defer.
What caused her little child to die?

Then in the crowd that huddled 'round
An old iron drum of burning wood
A light appeared from sky to ground
And in the night a figure stood.

Standing there in heaven's charm
An angel looked on solemn crowd.
She took the baby in her arms
She spoke to her. She spoke aloud.

We'll give to him a home above
In Angels' cradles he will sleep
We'll tell him always of your love
He'll not be cold. He'll never weep.

And when the angel disappeared
A girl remained with empty sleeve
Her eyes soon filled with woeful tears.
But in her heart she soon believed.

For then she saw a vision where
Her baby warm in heaven's love
Was sleeping safe in cradle there
With angels singing from above.
